I know this is a very personal question. In one of your blogs you mentioned being a victim of rape. In the long run, do you think overcoming the experience has made you a stronger person? You say it shouldn't be used to evolve characters. But doesn't survival naturally do that?

'Evolve' by definition means to change gradually. To grow from something simple to something complex.

I was already complex before I was raped. I was a little girl who loved to climb trees. I had a box of bumblebees that I would stick my hands into a scoop up my fuzzy friends; which in turn scared off all my human friends. I read novels and spent my spare time drawing or writing. I hated Barbie but loved my Ninja Turtle and Dragon Ball action figures. I could run like the wind and spent many days in the river catching fish with my hands.

Rape is not something gradual; it is sudden and terrifying.

Has it made me a strong? I have trouble sleeping without nightmares. I have a fear of people I have struggled to overcome since I was five. Andrew sometimes finds me curled up under the Kitchen table or sitting on the floor with my back to the wall because I am having a panic attack or some emotional breakdown.

These are things I doubt will ever go away.

The last time I was raped, I was sixteen years old. It was by a social worker who left me stranded in the woods five hours away from home. A friend who had unknowingly put me into the situation was too afraid to call home for help; even though I needed it. She was too afraid to face her father.

We ended up being welcomed in by a carnival; and a young man named Larry gave me his trailer for three days while my friend worked on finding us away home. During that time he fed us and provided for us.

I learned that genuine human love and kindness can come from the most unusual and unexpected places. The carnies had no reason to let us stay- they were simply good people and recognized that I was in need.

Did that life lesson make me a stronger person?

No, fuck you.

I was already strong.

I still am.

soaps:

1. storyofthedoor's request: these darling Red Fox Mary Janes

2. @cinnasketches requested fluffy bunny slippers, something that Faye darn-well deserves after all her recent hard walks and wear-and-tear. (cinnasketches also whipped up this elegant fanart!)

With 37% left to go, Amya’s kickstarter still needs your help and Faye could use more shoes - requests’ll remain open until we reach the end of this kickstarter campaign!

soaps:

Poor Faye has been running around for nearly 50 pages without shoes. Please, help her by checking out Amya’s Kickstarter! These printed books help sustain the comic, and with 43% left to go this campaign needs your help.To help keep up awareness I’m now taking sketch requests of Faye wearing any shoes you’d like (army boots, slippers, whatever the hell these are, and so on). Requests are welcome through replies, private messages, or twitter. We can’t thank you enough for your support!

Faye art for Writersavvy!
Her Kickstarter for Amya is currently running right now; have you checked it out yet? Amya is one of my favorite webcomics (and probably one of the few that I read regularly). Please go support this wonderful project!

It’s so wonderful, I love it!!

Savannah and I have been invited to Otakuthon this year for our work on Amya! Can it really be almost two weeks away? If you’re in Montreal for the big event, we would love to see you.
Needless to say, I’m beyond honored. This trip marks many exciting firsts for me, from being an invited guest of a con, to going outside the US (and how awesome to be seeing Montreal), and to actually personally meeting Philip Bourque, the writer with whom I got my webcomic start back in 2007.
Like the last time I joined the Amya table, I’ve whipped up some hand-drawn/colored art cards for the occasion. These originals will be for sale, so message me if you’re attending and would like to reserve one ahead of time!

A little trade with the Amya team who drew me a really cool Namesake fanart. This is Faye, a fiery mute spellcaster and an enormous cutie! Amya and Namesake are supporting each other lately because we both have Kickstarters with awesome ladies going on at the same time! Stressed comic artists unite.
Anywho. Feels good to color something that isn’t a Namesake page. It’s been a while!
Please check out:
The Valor Kickstarter
The Amya Kickstarter

Oh my gosh, such a cute take on Faye! I absolutely love it!
Please reblog and share the Valor and Amya Kickstarter! Both kick-ass projects deserve some attention!
